The measure of intelligence has for years been the IQ Test (Intelligence Quotient); a series of tests and tasks that are graded, the resultant quotient being a persons ‘IQ’ level. Those with a high IQ are very intelligent, while those with a low IQ are classed as dimwitted.
Makes me think of this; You need an IQ level of 60 to tie your shoelaces, it makes you think why so many Australians use thongs. Yes, an old NZ schoolboy joke.
But I read an interesting article yesterday that explains something that I have always considered and led me to further reading into the wee hours.
Prejudice and IQ are linked. Racists and bigots generally have a low IQ, markedly lower than the ‘normal’ spectrum. Further, I found that conservative people had a similarly low IQ, although not quite as low as the former. Liberally minded people tended to have a higher IQ than the ‘normal’ spectrum and are therefore lesser in number.
Does this not explain why we seem to have a preponderance of conservative governments. Not that the governments are conservative, but their ideologies are. The politicians have a higher IQ, high enough that they know that in order to entice votes their policies need to be conservative to gain power.
Why do conservative people need conservative values? Because conservative values are simple, less complicated. People of low intelligence tend to gravitate toward socially conservative ideologies, which have a higher resistance to change and, in turn, prejudice. Because the conservative ideologies are more structured and ordered and make it easier to understand a complicated world., it is unfortunate that many of these features can also contribute to prejudice.
Let’s look at an example.
The latest Republican primary and caucuses in America. Why have the three conservative candidates outpaced the one liberal? Because the conservative candidates are appealing to the less intelligent people. The liberal is trailing because his ideas require a greater cognitive ability and more intelligent people are harder to find.
By voting for a conservative candidate the less intelligent people don’t need to think so hard, don’t need to complicate their lives by considering the more complex liberal ideologies.
Oh, you don’t believe me…
“Are racists dumb? Do conservatives tend to be less intelligent than liberals? A provocative new study from Brock University in Ontario suggests the answer to both questions may be a qualified yes.
The study, published in Psychological Science, showed that people who score low on I.Q. tests in childhood are more likely to develop prejudiced beliefs and socially conservative politics in adulthood.”

“Despite their important implications for interpersonal behaviors and relations, cognitive abilities have been largely ignored as explanations of prejudice. We proposed and tested mediation models in which lower cognitive ability predicts greater prejudice, an effect mediated through the endorsement of right-wing ideologies (social conservatism, right-wing authoritarianism) and low levels of contact with out-groups.”

The latter quote is from an Abstract in the Journal of the Association of Psychological Science. I mention this to show that the idea is not mainstream media bunkum, not just my fanciful idea; it has serious foundation.
So while lower IQ levels prevail in numbers, we get a conservative government.
