Passengers stage sit-in on plane at Birmingham Airport

Viking Hellas

Some 100 passengers staged a sit-in on a plane at Birmingham Airport refusing to get off for several hours.

The Viking Hellas flight was originally scheduled to leave from Manchester for Athens at 13:00 BST, but passengers were then taken by bus to Birmingham.

They boarded a plane due to leave at 17:00, but were then told to get off, which they refused to do.

At about 01:30 BST they finally agreed to leave and left the airport by bus to return to Manchester.

West Midlands Police boarded the plane during the dispute.

A police spokesman said: “It was just a civil dispute and the police were there monitoring the situation to make sure it didn’t get out of hand.”

He said there had been “an issue between the airline and the passengers”.

A passenger named Dorota said the flight had been chartered and they were originally due to fly on Friday, 21 October.

She said: “People are hungry. They have not eaten since this morning.

“The air conditioning has been switched off and it is getting hot. The airline will not give us food, only water.”

She later said: “We decided to leave the plane because there was no point in staying on there.

“We are going home. We have got a letter from Viking Hellas and we can get a refund.”

The letter said the plane could not take off due to unforeseen circumstances, she said.

No-one has been available for comment from Viking Hellas.

Just another example of companies trampling over the rights of people. Delays, transfers, no food, no explanations.

Is it any wonder the 99% are getting fuckin’ angry?

It wasnt just flight to Athens. I was going to Erbil, Iraq. Most of passengers did not see families for 7-8 years! There were little children on board. Viking Hellas has treated us like cattles. It was the worse nightmare in my life! We should fly from Manchester to Athens, from Athens to Erbil. I was in Manchester airport 10 am, flight should be at 13:00. No information until 15. 15:30 airport manager told us there is a bus for us and we are going to Birmingham, will fly to Suleymaniyah, Iraq at 17. We came to Birmingham at 19, 20:00 we were in plane. Sat there for hour, then Sky Wings capitan told us, flight has been cancelled, we can go to Manchester!
We asked if he is joking but he just told us to go! We refused and asked to get us somebody from Viking but no one was available, so they brought police to plane! Police told us if we not leave plane they will take us out. We occupied plane for few hours, and decided to go. They used blackmail if we not go we gonna have to stay in Birmingham , if we leave they will take us back to Manchester.

When we left plane they put us to bus. With not heating and light and they brought us back to Manchester!
We asked driver to turn heating on he refused and just laughed!

We were cold and hungry. Company did not provide food or hot drinks, juts cold pepsi and water. I will not leave this like that.

@Dorata, thank you so much for your reply. It confirms what I had suspected by reading the original BBC News. Your comment puts a full perspective on it. This type of situation is all too common with airlines, they are not worried about people, just profits. Your (you and your fellow passengers) action was correct in that it brought another corporate case of bad treatment to light. These companies and corporations have to be brought to task, which is why I support the Occupy Wall Street protest, this is what it is all about.

      Thank you again.

@Dorata, you’re welcome. All the world should be against this type of disrespect.

    I know that.

Some of passengers booked tickets for 21.10 and Viking has cancelled flight. They got told, they will fly 28, but it never happened. Even on Manchester airport security told us we will not fly as Viking is crap company. I should check ppl’s reviews before i booked ticket with them.

    Disrespectful bastards.

@Dorata, I can only wish you luck. Maybe this news will stop many people from traveling with them.
